"Fires in the Mind: What Students Can Tell Us About Motivation and Mastery"

K Cushman

Kathleen Cushman writes and speaks to a national audience about the lives and learning of adolescents. An educator and journalist, in 2000 she co-founded the nonprofit What Kids Can Do (WKCD.org), where her chief role has been to collaborate with youth on books that concern their lives and learning. In her latest such book, Fires in the Mind (Jossey-Bass, 2010), more than 160 diverse youth nationwide explored and analyzed their own learning process by asking the question "What does it take to get really good at something?"  Cushman’s many other books with youth include the best-selling Fires in the Bathroom: Advice for Teachers from High School Students and its sequel, Fires in the Middle School Bathroom. In a book for principals, students spoke out about school climate and culture (Sent to the Principal) and in a book for parents (What We Can’t Tell You), teenagers talked  candidly about developing trust and responsibility. For more information, visit www.kathleencushman.com.
